Computing Support

The goal of computing support within the Biological and Ecological Engineering Department is to provide robust access to computing resources within the department and across campus. Computing resources are provide at three levels: 1) within the department, 2) at the College of Engineering (click here), and 3) through OSU computing support (click here).

If you are having problems with your computer or network connection, You should look through the frequently asked questions below. If you don't see the answer to your problem, you can contact support here.

Departmental Computing Support

Computer Setup for ALL BEE Computers

Any computer that is connected to the departmental network are required to conform to certain standards. These standards reflect needs for security, access, and ANY COMPUTER THAT DOES NOT CONFORM TO THESE STANDARDS WILL BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE NETWORK.

  • You must have the BEE Network Administrator set up your machine
  • You must have an "admin" account on your machine. The Network Admininistrator can set this up.
  • You must have Symantec Antivirus running and configured correctly. The Network Admininistrator can set this up.

Accounts
All BRE students are given a computer account that is centrally administrated. It is an ENGR account, which is accessible from any machine on campus, as long as you login to the ENGINEERING domain. If you have not set up your account, you may do so by taking you student ID card to Hovland Room 108. Use your ID with the swipe card reader to access the machines, and follow the instructions to create a new account. Remember your account name and password…

Drive Space
When you log on from any NT server on campus to the ENGINEERING domain, you will automatically have a drive mapped (Z:) to a STAK volume on a central ENGR server. This provides you with 100MB of space on that server.

Email
Once you set up your account, you will automatically have an email address. However, you will still need to set up a mail client to access this account. In the BRE department, we support the Outlook Express client, available on the Windows desktop on BRE computers. When you first run Outlook Express, you will have to specify information about your account and the mail server. The account you will use will be your login account on engr.orst.edu. The mail server is engr.orst.edu, for both sending mail and receiving mail. You should set up an IMAP account; this allows you to store your mail on the server (rather than locally), which allows you to use any computer to access your mail messages. You are given 2MB of storage for mail on the server, with a temporary limit of up to 6MB.

Your Own Web Page(s)
You can create a web page for yourself on your STAK drive. To do this, see the College of Engineering support pages at http://www.engr.orst.edu/computing/faqs/web.html.

Printing
When you log into the BIOENGINEERING domain from a BRE computer, you will have access to publicly available printers. These are the printers in the BRE computer annex labs.

Installing software on a BEE Lab Computers
You will not be able to install software on a BRE computer without authorization of the BRE network administrator. If you have legitimate need to install legitimate software, contact Bob for permissions and instructions.
